Pyro watched Wolverine go with a smirk when his attention was drawn to a girl shouting at the cashier. Poor guy. He snickered to himself, then glanced down at his newspaper, flipping the lighter absently. Click open, snap closed. Click open, snap closed.
He paused to take the lid off of his coffee cup so he could ash his cigarette over it. He saw her walk over and sit near him, and he flashed her a quick grin. She was pretty cute. He stuck the cigarette back in his mouth and leaned across the aisle between their tables. "If you want normal coffee," he advised, "just go for the dark roast next time."

She turned and looked at the boy in the corner, nodding. "Thanks," she said. It's nice that someone here knows how to teach someone to order a goddamn cup of coffee, she thought to herself. She appreciated the help. Not like that idiot doctor who couldn't stand her attitude for more than five minutes. That's why she hated adults. They wanted complete obedience, and they wanted you to believe whatever they did. Young people were more flexible, and they weren't so focused on rules and limitations.
"Nice lighter," she said, intrigued by its design. "Where did you get it?" She never realized that you could get a lighter with a design on it. She made a mental note to buy one once she got her hands on some money.

Looking a little surprised at the question, Pyro glanced down at his lighter and snapped it shut again. "Oh. A friend gave it to me a long time ago," he told her. "I don't know where he got it." He'd had that lighter forever, since he was going to Xavier's. It was his security blanket, honestly. It was always with him.
"So are you from around here?" he asked lightly. It was a small step up from 'Come here often?' but the classics were classics for a reason.

"No, not really," she replied casually. "I'm from Massachusetts." She put her coffee down and took out a pack of Parliaments from her purse. They were the unfiltered kind. She hated it. The people in North Salem only smoked the filtered kind. She had to drive all the way to the city to get filtered ones, and they were expensive too. Everything in the city was expensive. Breathing was expensive in New York City. Just being alive meant that you paid in dollars and cents.
She inhaled the smoke, feeling it rise in her chest. It was comforting. She had to be cautious about smoking in the manor, so she often left just to satisfy her cravings for cigs. It was a nasty habit, but she couldn't help it. She had been going through that whole teenage rebellion phase, and since her parents thought smoking was "unladylike," she just had to do it. It was funny how her parents could manipulate her like that.

Feigning interest, John turned his chair toward her. "Boston?" he presumed, pointedly not sounding disgusted at the prospect. Aside from the hideous accents, John hated Boston because his only encounter there had been full of dead cops and Bobby Drake's parents. He wasn't sure which had been worse. The dead cops hadn't made him feel like shit, but then again, Bobby's parents hadn't made him a criminal. After toasting those officers, he'd never fly commercial again.
Of course, he'd done plenty in the meantime to warrant that as well.

"Ugh, Boston. I hate Boston," she replied. "It's too trendy there. Everyone looks at you like you're a freak if you're not in the in-crowd." And they hate mutants there, she thought to herself. It was easier for her to hide the fact that she was a mutant. She had no physical signs of mutation, and being able to shoot a gun really well could just be interpreted as personal hobby or just the result of being some kind of redneck. But just because she could hide her powers didn't mean she liked the atmosphere. It was too snobby and preppy. She didn't really Massachusetts much, really. Liberal people thought she was a redneck for liking hunting and coming from a Republican family. Conservative people didn't like her because of her boyish nature and her moderately liberal political views. In fact, that was pretty much how it was like everywhere. She just wasn't a very liked person. It didn't help that she didn't have very good social skills. She was picky when it came to friends and so outspoken that she drove people away. But that was just the way she was.

Giving her the most charming smile he could muster--the kind he reserved for chicks he might want to go for--John gave her a playful glance over. "No, you seem like the kind of girl that makes her own crowd," he agreed.
He usually thought "rebellious" girls were too bitchy and self-obsessed, but she seemed toned-down enough that she would be worth it.
