"One more thing: Do not tell anyone about the mission. Only you and I are to discuss it. If you tell anyone about the mission, the consequences will be dire," replied Xavier. "It is of great importance that we maintain a high level of secrecy. The fate of many people rest in your hands." He had a feeling that Tyler would obey this rule so that he could reap the benefits of being a spy, but he didn't really know whether Tyler would care that Xavier mentioned that people's lives would be in the balance. He probably cared more about Xbox or whatever young people were doing with their lives these days.
Xavier was pleased that his plan was going smoothly so far. He was almost afraid that the boy was going to just go back to class without putting up a fight. But adolescent boys weren't really like that. They always wanted to play with fire when they knew they should be learning to keep their hands to themselves.

With a mischievious grin, Tyler held up three fingers. "I won't tell a soul. Scout's honor," he joked. He'd actually been a scout years earlier. He didn't really remember, though. Vaguely, he knew that he had been. The dire consequences and lives hanging in the balance was lost on him, but he would have kept the secret just because Xavier had asked him to.
He started for the door, then paused and turned back toward the professor. "Why should I tell them I want to join the Brotherhood?" he asked.

"They may not ask you to join their ranks. They are always looking for recruits, but they can be selective at times. I would advise you to appear to seem interesting but not completely convinced. This will test your acting skills. I trust that you are a good actor," he replied. But hopefully not too good, he thought to himself. The art of espionage was a path of tangled rose thorns. It was easy to be lured by flowers and end up scratched and bruised.
"I will see you tomorrow. For now, I have some other business to which to attend. I hope I have answered all your questions sufficiently. I trust I will see you in Literature class soon." Probably not, he thought to himself.

Tyler nodded once and headed out the door to go get ready to meet with the Brotherhood. He hoped he was a good actor, too.
