For Tyler, I picked the song "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails (but the Johnny Cash version is like 1093849327 times better). HurtI hurt myself today to see if I still feel I focus on the pain the only thing that's real the needle tears a hole the old familiar sting try to kill it all away but I remember everything what have I become? my sweetest friend everyone I know goes away in the end you could have it all my empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt I wear this crown of shit upon my liar's chair full of broken thoughts I cannot repair beneath the stains of time the feelings disappear you are someone else I am still right here what have I become? my sweetest friend everyone I know goes away in the end and you could have it all my empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt if I could start again a million miles away I would keep myself I would find a way I think this song does a good job of capturing the sheltered little world Tyler has trapped himself in. The first stanza alludes to the fact that he really does know what happened to him, he just refuses to acknowledge it. He can feel physical pain, but none of his emotions are real. He's numbing or "killing away" the bad emotions, but really he knows what happened. He's just repressed it. The second stanza deals more with the way he's leading his life. By denying his past and hiding it from the people he cares about, he's pretty much lying about his whole life to everyone. He definitely has a lot of "broken thoughts" when he doesn't let himself think very much on anything and can't think below the surface. He gets flashes of questions and memories that he cuts off and ignores. As far as the feelings "disappearing", that's just his mind getting better and better at hiding everything he doesn't want to deal with. Finally, he's extremely childish because he's effectively frozen himself in one stage of emotional development and is incapable of maturing. As the people around him change and grow, Tyler stays the same immature kid. The chorus, first of all, addresses the fact that he has made himself this way, twisted his mind into this trap. It also hints that while he considers everyone his friend, he is always prepared for people to leave, and doesn't let himself get too emotionally invested because he doesn't want to be hurt again. The second part is more of a concession that his life lacks any sort of meaning. He has nothing, and he isn't dependable because he always runs away from his problems. The last stanza is interesting for him because it suggests that deep down, Tyler isn't happy with what he's become. If he could do it another way, if he'd ended up somewhere else when he walked to New York, maybe he would have still been himself. As it is, though, he isn't himself. He's a shell of a person.
